THE THREE MEN headed up Echo’s front steps. Via sat at the window, chewing on a piece of beef jerky as her stomach begged for something more substantial. A noise in the back room pulled her attention from the door just as Echo stepped in with his company.

“What the hell!” Echo’s words boomed throughout the house, and his heavy footsteps hammered in Via’s skull. She ran after Echo as he burst through the doors leading to the laundry room.

“What’s going on?” Via followed the two men just as they skidded to a stop behind Echo. Pulling her knife from her boot, she propelled past the two men to see what was going on. Echo held a cloth-covered item in his hand. The burly man with the fuzzy beard stepped past Via and checked the broken window.

“Whoever did it is gone.” He closed his eyes, raised his head, and scented the air. “I can’t smell or hear them.”

Via noted his rough-hewn face, strong features, and surprisingly sexy Scottish accent. She nearly snickered when he lifted his nose to the air like a dog. With her blade still in her hand, she turned to glance at Echo to ask him about the Scottish hound, but froze. Echo didn’t wear his emotions like some men; however, she could tell something was wrong. Despite his blank face, stress lines marred his forehead and his eyes darkened to an ominous shade of black. She’d never seen him do that before. Instead of moving away in fear, she trod toward him, reaching out to grab the cloth item in his hand, but Echo snatched it away and shoved it into his pocket. From the way he was acting, he already knew what was wrapped in the cloth.

Echo shoved past Via with a bit more force than she’d expected. “Via,” he pointed to each man as he spoke, “that’s Luca and Irish.” He pointed again, but this time to her. “Irish and Luca, that’s Buffy.” He headed up the stairs without as much as a glance back.

Via thought to smile at his nickname for her, but instead she placed her blade back in her shoe and hissed, “Rude ass.” One of the two men—she didn’t know which—laughed.

“He’s got some shit to deal with, and if that is what I think it is, there’s no use in unpacking.” The clean-shaven one hefted the bag he’d come in with over his shoulder. Neither man acknowledged her as they spoke.

“I figured as much. I’m going to raid his fridge.”

Via didn’t like being in a room with people as they spoke amongst themselves. Before either of them could move, she placed herself between the two men, stood on her tiptoes, and spoke up. “What was that?” She pointed to the window. Even though the item was no longer there, they understood to what she was referring. The scruffy one stepped back and extended his hand in greeting while the other one glared at her.

“Luca.”

Via took his large hand in hers and nearly had her brains scrambled when he shook it.
